How to Write Perfect Answers in CBSE Board Exams
In CBSE board exams, how you write matters as much as what you write. Two students with the same knowledge can get very different marks depending on how they present their answers. Here is how to write answers that get full marks every time.
The Golden Rule: Read the Question Carefully
Before writing anything, read the question twice. Identify:
- What is being asked (define, explain, describe, compare, calculate, draw)
- How many marks it carries (this tells you how much detail is expected)
- Whether diagrams or examples are needed
1-Mark Questions (VSA)
These require direct, one-line answers. Do not write long paragraphs for 1-mark questions — you waste time and the examiner is not looking for it.
- Write exactly one sentence or one word
- If it is a definition, write just the core definition
2-Mark Questions (SA I)
Write 2–3 sentences. Cover the main point and one supporting detail or example.
3-Mark Questions (SA II)
These are short-answer questions requiring 3–4 sentences or bullet points. Structure your answer as:
- Opening statement (what is it)
- Explanation or details (how or why)
- Example or conclusion
5-Mark Questions (LA)
Long-answer questions should be well-structured. Use this format:
- Introduction: 1–2 lines defining or introducing the topic
- Main body: 3–4 points in bullet form or short paragraphs with subheadings
- Diagram: Include a labelled diagram if relevant (diagrams fetch easy marks)
- Conclusion: 1 line wrapping up the answer
Use Headings and Bullet Points
Examiners check hundreds of papers. A well-structured answer with clear headings and bullet points is much easier to read and mark than a wall of text. This alone can earn you extra marks through positive presentation.
Diagrams Get You Easy Marks
For Science subjects especially, always draw a diagram when relevant — even if the question does not explicitly ask for one. Label it neatly with a ruler. A good diagram can add 1–2 marks to an answer.
Manage Your Answer Sheet Neatly
- Start each answer on a new line with the question number written clearly
- Leave a line gap between answers
- Do not overwrite or scratch heavily — use a single clean line to strike out mistakes
- Write with a dark blue or black pen — never pencil (except for diagrams)
Do Not Leave Any Question Blank
In CBSE board exams, there is no negative marking. Always attempt every question. Even if you are unsure, write what you know — partial answers can earn partial marks, especially in 3-mark and 5-mark questions.
Presentation is a skill you can learn with practice. The more mock papers you write, the better your answer-writing will become.
