How to Read NCERT Books Effectively for CBSE Exams
If you ask any CBSE topper their secret, almost all of them will say the same thing: read NCERT thoroughly. But what does reading NCERT effectively actually mean? Here is a step-by-step method that works.
Step 1: Read the Full Chapter Once Without Stopping
On your first read, go through the entire chapter from start to finish without stopping to take notes. The goal is to get a big-picture understanding of what the chapter is about. Do not worry if you do not understand everything — just keep reading.
Step 2: Identify Key Concepts and Terms
On your second read, slow down. Highlight or underline:
- Important definitions
- Bold or italicised terms
- Formulas, laws, and rules
- Dates and names (for History chapters)
- Diagrams and their labels
Step 3: Solve In-Text Questions Immediately
NCERT textbooks have questions placed within the text (not just at the end). These are called in-text questions. Solve them as soon as you reach them — do not skip to the end. They check whether you have understood what you just read.
Step 4: Make Short Notes
After finishing the chapter, create a one-page summary in your own words. Include:
- Main topics covered
- Key definitions
- Important formulas or reactions
- Diagrams (draw and label them yourself)
Writing in your own words forces your brain to process the information, making it much easier to recall during exams.
Step 5: Solve End-of-Chapter Exercises
The exercises at the end of each NCERT chapter are extremely important. CBSE board questions are frequently taken directly from these exercises. Solve every single question — do not skip any.
Step 6: Test Yourself with MCQs
After completing the chapter exercises, take a quick MCQ quiz on the chapter. MCQs test your conceptual understanding in a way that long-answer practice does not. Use Genius Mind India to access free chapter-wise MCQ questions for all subjects.
How Many Times Should You Read NCERT?
Ideally, read each chapter at least three times before your exam:
- First time: for understanding
- Second time: for note-making
- Third time (before exam): for quick revision using your notes
Common Mistakes Students Make with NCERT
- Skipping in-text questions
- Only reading, never writing practice answers
- Highlighting everything (which means highlighting nothing)
- Jumping to guides without finishing NCERT first
The NCERT book is your best friend for CBSE exams. Treat it like a treasure, not a formality.
